Not a spoiler: This is the first ep reaction I've done, I'm not likely to go back and do reviews because uh, lazy THE PAST IS DEAD AND I HAVE NO REGRETS. Suffice to say, this is my first "as it happens" season with Dr Who, and it's like delicious cake. I love this show so hard it hurts. It's a good hurt. That really satisfying kind of hurt that comes after you work out. I am working out my squee muscle. It had atrophied to almost nothing I AM MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME.
Getting this out of the way: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SHOWERFOOTBALLHAIR
Right, now that's out of the way: So this was a filler episode. But you know what? It was a damn fine one. I did not appreciate what a strong season this is for New Who until I started going back and watching RTD's reign. Which leads me to a tangent:
CONFESSION 1: Guys, I dunno how to say it, but...10/Rose? I...just...didn't feel it. 9/Rose was lovely, but then I thought 9 was swell. And I feel like because I came into this basically after 11 started, I can never approach it the same way fans can who found Who through 9 or 10. 11 is the Doctor. Straight up. Matt Smith *owns* the role, and I don't mean in a "PWND" sense, I mean in the hoighty-toighty actorspeak "taking ownership of your role" sense. He sails through every line so smoothtly it's scary. I'm sure there have been junk lines, and if/when I watch all eps over again I'll find them. But...it's hard!
Right, anyway, this week's ep: What impresses me is that the main element of the story in this that should have made me snarky as all hell: "Nice Guy" wet blanket won't tell girl he's into her, girl is obviously into him and won't tell him she's into him, even though they so totally are because feelings are hard blah blah blah. It's a trope that annoys me these days. I am getting old?) I even said "oh god, he's a Nice Guy..."
But I ended up not caring, and I ended up not even gagging when they went "omg of course we love each other and we gots to make out CAUSE OUR LOVE NEUTRALISES ANCIENT SPACE SHIT, BABY. STRAIGHT-UP". I even thought it was *sweet*. ME.
This may have been helped by the fact that last night I finally got to Runaway Bride and it was actually *physically painful* (damn shame too, cause there was some really good prosthetics and make-up work). I'm being snippy, yes, but my point is that this seasons low-points (::cough cough:: space Spitfires) have not even come close to, oh-I-dunno
Because somehow it all hung together, and I have prepared a brief dramatization why I think that is true:
EPISODE: Why Joyo, we've been peeking inside your head and notice you would possibly like some fan treats. Would you like fan treats?
CUE SHOWER. CUE FOOTBALL. CUE WRAPPED IN TOWEL. CUE PSYCHIC CAT-TALK CUE HAIR CUE HAIR CUE HAIR FOREVER.
ME: OIC. Yes, thank you. You may now do whatever the hell you want to, I do not even care. you
Of course what is implicit in this is how amazing Matt Smith is with the doctor. It's not really about Matt Smith and his awesome bod (he's a bit scrawny for m--OH I AM FUCKING LYING I LOVE IT)
Okay so I had slightly deeper/more coherent thoughts, but I may need to put the proper "reaction" in a different post...I appear to be distracted *stares at icon*.

Date: 2010-06-14 03:06 am (UTC)Yeah, the Nice Guy thing didn't bother me, either, and I'm usually very onto that kind of stuff. I think for me it was helpful that she was obviously into him from the beginning -- she didn't need convincing.
Also: it took some doing but I'm finally starting to find Eleven hot. I like this feeling.
