Dexter: Episode 5x01

So I actually finished S4 at the weekend. Do you know what I did at the last episode? I figured out what was going to happen, immediately discounted that as a possibility and therefore managed to be surprised when Rita showed up in the tub :(

It was upsetting.

I spent the next two hours walking around the house, just saying "...bullshit!". Now, I wasn't just shocked and horrified, I thought it was kind of...cheap.

I thought they were setting up a season where Dexter has to struggle against...peace. He realizes that he is actually a human being and that he can be a father/husband and maybe he can even reign in his Dark Passenger. There could be a season-arc of Massive Temptation and Will He Change or Won't He? I was interested in that season. But then they went and undid *all* of that development. I was left thinking "what the fuc

I was worried that there may have been a shark in that tub. And that the scene we did not see was Dexter grabbing the baby and exited through the bathroom window. By jumping. Over the tub. The tub with the shark in it...if you see what I mean. But I chose to remain optimistic!

And then we watched Ep 1 on Monday. Aaaaaaaand...yeah. Proper worried now:

1. It was a poorly written episode. Especially...most of hte scenes with Dexter. Jesus god the breaking-the-news-to-the-family scene. And the stuff with Astor...bad. Just...what have we seen from her that would make her react with "you don't care we'd be better off without you

2. "That's the first human thing you've done all day" Okay, now, in S4 I thought they were taking Harry Ghost and transitioning him from Voice-of-Reason into the personification of Dexter's Dark Passenger. In S1 and 2 he's a balancing force in Dex's mind, but in 3 and increasingly 4 he starts to resist Dexter's emergence from the isolating resignation to his psychopathy and The Code, and that coincided with Deb and Dex both discovering that Harry was not the ideal dude he seemed. And that was cool.

BUT THEN THIS HAPPENED. Why? Where did it come from? Just one episode ago Harry would have chewed Dex's ass through for losing control like that and caring about people, and suddenly he's all "Awww do you feel better now pumpkin? Now go! your family needs you!"

Doesn't sit with me.

3. When the Deb/Quinn thing happened, I actually said out loud "Strike One". Don't get me wrong, Quinn's all foxy and shit, but I am sick of Deb getting used by this show, and it just felt totally cheap.

4. Dear show: don't make Quinn into Doakes Jr. We have been there before, we know how it ends and I am going to get stroppy!

5. At this point I don't see how this could not be the last season. You've got a show where right from the start, the stakes were Life or Death. There were so many threads where you thought "whoa how are they going to resolve these plot points and keep Dexter from being busted without character dea--oh. They are just going to kill them, then." You can only do this so many times before I a)get bored of it and b)get angry that you keep putting Deb through all of this shit. Seriously.

I'm gonna keep watching, but I'm...worried.
