Vividcon 2010: Con Report, Like Oh My God! (Pt 1)
Note; This is just the con report in text. I'm going to do a separate Vid Recs/reaction post, because a: People should like things that I like and b: It will be good for me?
Okay, I'm going to write this now, because once I get back to work it's just gonna get sucked down the vortex of "LATER I PROMISE". But as a warning: I am sitting in Oxford, having dragged myself kicking and screaming awake from a nap, thinking "man, it was really nice of
pipsqueaky to take us to Dairy Queen for Blizzards and then drop us off at our house an hour ago".
You guys, that happened *yesterday night*. IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY.
Also, I didn't take notes so this is all pulled directly from the labyrinth that is my *brain*.
ETA: Didn't finish it, trySaturday Morning Sunday PM brain instead. ANYWAY
VIVIDCON 2010:
Initially,
absolutedestiny and I observed Zombie Apocalypse 2010 from the safety of our smartphones en route to the airport ("omg no vcrs?"), and it was not until we were both gently sedated on the airplane that people started throwing up and getting arrested. Otherwise, flight was fine. Ian did not even get deported. Then After
pipsqueaky's car broke down en route to pick us up,
faneunice took time from preparing to move to come and rescue us. There was *coffee*. And then Magical Target, where she and I found everything we ever needed, and then leaving the store A GIANT RAINBOW APPEARED. Amazing.
jarrow showed up while
absolutedestiny and I snoozed like a pile of puppies on
pipsqueaky's couch. He became Puppy Number 3. Then there was Crew. It's tradition.
Arriving at the hotel the next day, we showed up to discover that a)couldn't check in yet (lol) and b) ELEVATORS NON-FUNCTIONAL. Lol aaand Lol. Because VVC people are awesome, no VCRs was not going to stop folks from room-based vidtimes, people were making ways around the No VCR issue, and once elevators were fixed and bags stowed in rooms, Iwas kidnapped by went along with
sisabet and
cappylicious to the Mall of Dreams for Radioshack and RF converters. LIKE AN ADULT. We *did not* purchase the airbrushed "Bieber Fever" shirt for
absolutedestiny. We should have?
Also, my phone is from the future.
On returning to the hotel, there were A MILLION HUGS by familiar and new faces, which was awesome. Met
mresundance who is *delightful* and not just because he said nice things about my vid. Saw
kuwdora IN MEATSPACE for the first time, and was delighted that she was as bouncy as in vidding chat. Oh oh and
f1renze and
sdwolfpup, who I had chatted with before but never met. I also met
countessmary, but I can't remember if I met her on Thurs or Fri, but regardless I saw/chatted numerous times over the weekend and I do give her a thumbs up, and not just because she laughed at all of my jokes.
My memory of the rest of Thurs is a blur, but we ended up in the House of Meat with
sockkpuppett and a little bit of
vagabondage. My memory is fading...it may have something to do with the $3.50 margaritas?
::rereads:: ALL OF THE NAME-DROPS. I think I'm making a point because it's most social I've been in 7 day period in like the last 6 months? Dunno, anyway. Rambling.

So Friday morning was spent trying to penetrate crowds to get to breakfast, and then running away to hide--which is shame because last year that was my fav time for informal chatting and meeting, but omfg TOO MANY PEOPLE (we were competing with Lollapalooza at the hotel). I escaped with coffee to wait for the start of:
History: Pre-Vividcon Favorites
I love the history shows. If you're new to vidding (like me) or believe that vidding was invented in 2005, I'd say always go, partially because there a lot of vids in these shows which tend not to be available online. There was a meta vid ("Pressure", afaik not available online?) about vidding from 1990, which served the dual purpose of showing work from the Two-VCR-Times (now twice as impossible at Springhill Suites), and also showing *how women got together and actually did VCR vidding (protip: stopwatches + TAB)*. I use the past-tense, but surely that's still going down somewhere, right?
It's staggering to think about the evolution of technology over even the last 10, nevermind 20-30 years and its implications for fanvidding (and, well...all of fandom). That's about as intelligent as I can get without totally derailing into a different post, but...like, whoa. Kandy Fong was at VVC. I was going to talk to her, but I suddenly was sheepish, and convinced it would go something like this: "HI, I SAW YOUR SLIDE SHOW FROM 1975. IT IS OLDER THAN ME AND I AM 26 AND A HALF YEARS OLD ::shows on hands:: ...I LIKE HOW YOU ARRANGED SLIDES TO MUSIC. GOODBYE"
Given that my direct in-person feedback to people about vids I like tended to amount to that, I guess that yes, it would have?
Fav:
"So Pure" to Homicide LoTS,
deejay's "Deteriorata"
ShadowSongs' "Data's Dream"
All of them made me very happy.
Identity
The Identity show was an interesting mix of Old and New-to-Me. I thought the theme worked quite well. When it comes to vid-descriptions I like to watch before I read so it was an exercise in "see how it fits the theme". Yay!
Favs (of those I'd never seen): "The Greatest" by
hollywoodgrrl, "Don't Lose Yourself" by
sweetestdrain
Nearly New
I ducked out after the first half to go to
dualbunny's Structure Redux panel, but the first hour had some excellent moments. Several vids I recognized from releases on people's journals like Sisabet and Cappy's "Crazy in Love" and
millylicious's "Feel It", but there were a couple that stayed with me.
akemi42's Watchmen vid "Death of a Superhero" is probably my favorite Watchmen vid of the con. And there were 5. I think. More details in Vid Recs.
Ok, wow. That's a lotta post. I think I should break this into sections. Behold, Pt 1.
