Festivid 2014: MY VID MY VID MY VID

Whether or not I have the presence of mind to get my shit together and make a recs list remains to be seen.

In the mean time:

My gift was an Only Lovers Left Alive vid and it is PERFECT.  It is everything I loved about the movie and it is so slow and lush and sexy and WATCH IT RIGHT NOW (it's an embedded Youtube vid on the official Festivid post)

Dear Festividder

Hi! Hello! Yes!

You are great.  People who make vids for other people are great.  As a reward I am going to try this strange new thing called "brevity", for your sake.  I'm prone to auto-RPF bloviating so let's consider this a character building exercise.

General things about vids (mostly re-pasted from last year):

General Likes in Vids

I am inclined to like vids. I like playing with lyrics and the theme of the song. I LOVE LOVE LOVE internal motion and choreography. I like it when I can see something new every time I see a vid. I love when vidders get interpretive with lyrics. I like to be moved emotionally, in any direction.  I like critique.  Uh I guess what I am saying is that I like vids?

General Dislikes in Vids

Overuse of literalism. Overuse of filters/effects for the sake of using filters and effects. Microcutting for the sake of micro-cutting.

...actually that sounds like different parts of the same issue: it's just about making mindful desicions about the hows and whys of a vid. (I'm one of those people, sorry). I think the idea should carry the vid, and the cutting and effects should serve the idea. There's a really wide variety of styles that I like, including effects heavy vids, but they all have *intent*, if that makes sense.

Music

I'm pretty easy with music, as I genuinely enjoy a wide range of stuff. All time favorites include David Bowie, pre-Good News Modest Mouse, Velvet Underground, MGMT, Tori Amos, Andrew Bird, Joanna Newsom, the Pixies, and classic Elton John. Currently I can't stop listening to alt-J. But I like rock, most pop (esp upbeat), folk, soul, funk, psychadelic stuff, intrumental, metal, hip hop and I can be convinced about country western. I like finding new music through vids.

I don't have a lot of no-go areas, but "Things that sound like Nickleback or Evanescence" are gonna be a hard sell  (Again, sorry, I am one of *those* people).

Okay!  On to the specifics:

Survey for my class about Imaginary TV device

Hello flist friends!

I'm doing a last-minute survey for an idea for my IT Innovation class.  It's about a Smart TV adapter that tries to combine all of your TV sources into one convenient place.  It doesn't exist, or anything, but for the class I need to gather actual evidence that people might be interested.  I figured most of my Flist considers "TV" relevant to their interests!

Link is here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8D3YG96

It should only take about 5 mins (read a paragraph, react to it in 9 questions).

I would super appreciate it.

THIS SEMESTER IS UNREAL BUT IT'S ALMOST OVER.

Dear Festividder Letter 2013!

Dear Festividder,

OMG, look at you! You are here to make me a VID! <3 <3 <3 to you! You are amazing, and this is a super cool thing to do for someone. So LET'S GET TO IT!

My theme for this year is FEELINGS. I have a somewhat random assortment of movies and TV, but they all have something in common: they all have moved me in some significant way.

General likes in vids

I am inclined to like vids. I like playing with lyrics and the theme of the song. I LOVE LOVE LOVE internal motion and choreography. I like it when I can see something new every time I

see a vid. I love when vidders get interpretive with lyrics.

Dislikes

Currently I can't stop listening to Sleigh Bells, San Fermin (esp Sonsick omg), Cold War kids and Janelle Monae. But I like rock, most pop (esp upbeat), folk, soul, funk, psychadelic stuff, intrumental, metal, hip hop and I can be convinced about country western. I like finding new music through vids.

I don't have a lot of no-go areas, but "Things that sound like Nickleeback or Evanescence" are gonna be a hard sell. Also this is totally random but I basically can't stand Vampire Weekend. I don't know what it is about them. I don't know. I just...*shrugs*.

FESTIVIDS FESTIVIDS FESTIVIDS

Reveals are done!  We are dusted!  Our Festivids lives are complete!   I am a slow slow slug and am only posting about it now, so I hope y'all aren't too burned out on vid-talk.

First of all, my very own vid that was made FOR ME!  I received a TOTALLY FUN and BOUNCY vid to Toys by [livejournal.com profile] deejay , which you can peruse at your leisure here.  Extra thanks to her for picking up a rather last-minute pinch hit (I thought I may not have been making it easy this year!)

Next is the vid I made for [personal profile] bingeling:

Collage - a Homeland character study of the relationship between Carrie and Saul.  I have a looooot to say about this vid.  It's by far the most ambitious idea I've made thusfar (or at least fininshed and released).  I had the idea back in the summer, and promptly intimidated myself out of doing it.   But when I got my assignment I saw that they'd named Saul and Carrie's relationship SPECIFICALLY BY NAME I thought it must be a SIGN.

I'm glad I got the nudge I needed to actually pull it off, and I'm even gladder that it was what they *wanted*.   The reception to it was so so incredibly satisfying...I GOT A WHOLE WALL OF TEXT FROM MY RECIPIENT.  PARAGRAPHS OF "I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE".

All in all a good time.  Except I still need to do a recs post!  Do we still care about recs?  I do!

Dear Festividder Letter, 2012

Dear Festividder,

Well, here we are again. Or in your case it may be the first time. Who knows? Regardless, you are here now to make me a vid! Either way my tiny hands are clapping in anticipation.

This year I have a theme, and that theme is "formative childhood movies/tv". Be warned, I watched a hell of a lot of cartoons.

Also, here is a general prompt: I really don't have a lot of specific ideas in mind for these sources. What I'm honestly saying with my requests is this: You, My Secret Vidder, volunteered for these sources. You did that for a reason. That's what I want to see: your reason. I didn't have a lot of "TV friends" growing up who I shared these with. Seeing someone else getting excited about them via VIDS would be awesome. I am, as always, happy to have treats!

So, in rough order of how tightly they have wound my heartstrings, I give you:

The Wonderful World of Puss In Boots (Toei Animation 1969) SAFETY )

Twice Upon a Time (safety) )

Toys )

Count Duckula )

All Dogs Go To Heaven )
Rainbow Bright and the Star Stealer )

So let's talk about Once Upon a Time

WHo wants to geek out with me about it? I have many feelings.  I have so many feelings that apparently I had to write a fic.  My first fic.  Ever.

See, I'd been watching piles of TV.  Tore through half of Breaking Bad, got distracted.  Tore through Arrested Deveopment, then Parks and Rec.  Briefly revisited Ally McBeal for very shallow (RDJ-shaped) reasons.

And then at Vividcon (which I utterly failed to make a recs post for), there was [livejournal.com profile] flummery 's Ramalama Bang Bang youtu.be/NGI0c5YASNg which *reminded me* that I was only about halfway through S1.  That vid planted a wee little seed in the back of my head, because there was a specific episode I'd heard about that I could already tell I would be particularly susceptible to (spoiler: I WAS RIGHT).  And uh so I caught up through 2.01 this weekend and uh...it all made an impression.  Huge.  Big deal.  I have thoughts.  Some are substantive, some are...so not.  Let me share.

Spoilers for 1.01 through 2.01 )And then there was fic. )

A Dance With Dragons

Um...chose that icon because, uh...Winter is Coming?

Anyway, I finished book 5.  I'm caught up now!  The internet and its rampant spoilers in unexpected places can't hurt me anymore.

Speaking of spoilers, here is a cut:

Games of Thrones 2x01: I'd Be A lot Warmer With A Belly Full of Mead

If anyone is wondering, I did not lapse during the March Media Blackout, except when I accidentally bought Feast for Crows.

But I didn't watch Community.  And now I get to catch up.  But this is not about Community, this is about S2 of Game of Thrones.

Okay so season 2 rolls around and suddenly I'm a fancy-pants who's read the books through very-nearly-the-end-of Feast for Crows and now I'm some kind of sassy authority.  But seriously, all I've done in March was read A Song of Ice and Fire and then I got older and Ian gave me Skyrim and so then it was SOIAF *AND* Skyrim.  Goddamn swords everywhere.  Swords when I sleep.  Also fire.

Also in the spirit of GoT/SOIAF, I had a glass of mead when I watched the episode.  Which I finished 6 mins ago.  JUST ONE TINY GLASS.  From the bottle that I opened that was a housewarming gift to Ian like 8 years ago or something.

ANYWAY (Jesus), here is a pretty much instantaneous reaction to the first ep.  I will NOT spoil anything for the books, beyond where the story currently has us.  And when I do it will be to pout about like, inconsequential changes.  That is the warning.

Thank God It Wasn't Chevov's Axe )

Public Entry: Why I am Taking Part in the March Media Blackout

Why I Am Taking Part in the March Media Blackout

I am an American expat, a vidder, a gamer, and hopefully I will continue to be a games, or at least software, developer.

As such I've got a few horsies in this race.  Recent developments have come to light, and I'm kind of grateful for the timing.  After SOPA died down I was gonna ease off the promise to participate in the March Blackout, but now the likes of the MPAA, RIAA and Electronic Software Association (ESA) have kindly reminded me why it's so important that I don't.  None of this is over, and furthermore it's going to affect me on yet another level:  as a vidder.

So, to reaffirm my commitment:  In the month of March I will not be purchasing, downloading, playing or watching broadcasts of any film, tv show, music or game that is produced or distributed by members of the above.  I will not go to the movies.  I will also not illegally aquire media in any form (I don't tend to to begin with, but it's worth stating that this is part of the deal).

Why I am Doing This, and Why It Matters )

A Few Words for Sandy Herrold

It's not just that Sandy Herrold's influence on fans and fandom is unquestionable.  It's that it's unquestionably *excellent*.  I mean, just look at this:  http://fanlore.org/wiki/Sandy_Herrold#Remembrances

She touched so many people in such profound ways...before I was even *born*.

I was looking forward to finally seeing more of her, and I can't help but feel cheated that I will never get the chance to know her better than my first (dazed and hopelessly n00b-tranced) Vividcon.  Her feedback was...honestly it's the only feedback I can still clearly remember.

Personally, I will never know her any better than as the woman who boldly stated "This vid made me cry, but did not earn my tears" in Vividcon Vid Review in 2009.  But I will not forget that moment.  Because when you hear something like that, it is something that you *remember*.  You take it with you, and it challenges you to demand more from media as a viewer, and more from yourself as a creator.

And she was (hell, *is*) so important to people who are very dear to me.  So frankly, if they credit her with even an ounce of the brilliant, lovely beings they are today, I have to consider myself lucky just to have entered her orbit.
