Big thanks to [personal profile] absolutedestiny for formal beta-ing, and massive tech support. Additional thanks to[personal profile] trelkez and [personal profile] fan_eunice for massive cheerleading and VITAL SISABET PSYCHE-PENETRATION advice.

Alternative summary: A gentleman punches another gentleman with an unusual amount of skill. The other gentleman then helps the first to punch different gentlemen with more efficiency, and then the original gentleman returns the favor. They hug a lot.

The One

I saw you dancing out the ocean
Running fast along the sand
A spirit born of earth and water
Fire flying from your hands

In the instant that you love someone
In the second that the hammer hits
Reality runs up your spine
And the pieces finally fit

And all I ever needed was the one
Like freedom feels where wild horses run
When stars collide like you and I
No shadows block the sun
You're all I've ever needed
Baby you're the one

For each man in his time is Cain
Until he walks along the beach
And sees his future in the water
A long lost heart within his reach

And all I ever needed was the one
Like freedom feels where wild horses run
When stars collide like you and I
No shadows block the sun
You're all I've ever needed
Baby you're the one

And all I ever needed was the one
Like freedom feels where wild horses run
When stars collide like you and I
No shadows block the sun
Ohhh, you're all I've ever needed
Baby you're the one

Do You Wanna Ring the Bell, Apollo?

(Trivia: That was going to be the summary, but Ian looked like he wanted to die and I thought it might be over the top.)

I stole this vid from [personal profile] absolutedestiny. This makes me the [info]cappylicious of our house, except Ian and I are not related because this is not Supernatural fandom and that is not how the [redacted] Sisters get down. Also she vids so much fucking faster than I can and has made more than 3 vids.

Conclusion: I am not at all like Cappy, except for stealing.

N E WAY. How I stole the vid:

I was moping because I'd decided not to sign up for Festivids and then the day after the deadline regretted it. No fun for me! But there were treats! But on first glance nothing really jumped out at me as obvious. And I was shy!

And then Ian got excited, because he saw Rocky on [personal profile] sisabet 's list. He still holds a torch for his unfinished "homoerotic action movies of the 80s" vid, and declared that Apollo/Rocky would be so so so easy because it was only just barely not actual cannon.

I hadn't seen the movies. Ever! They passed me by. So he proved this to me by showing me a You Tube clip of the training montage in Rocky III, and...holy shit.

He was considering Dancing In the Dark and as I watched it a very familiar song that is dear to my heart came into my head.

I said "no, holy shit no wait because...Elton John". Ian was skeptical. "No I am really right about this and you don't understand here..."

I played the song over the montage with the clip-volume off and we fucking sat there for 6 minutes laughing and making "Crazy O-face" because JESUS CHRIST, OMG.

And then, EVEN SILL, he rejected it! Like, I don't know, some kind of bad monster! Like PAULY would have! And so I had to threaten him: If you don't make this, I'm gonna.

We briefly decided that we'd do some act of Sisabet psych-warfare pincer manoever by each doing one from Rocky or Apollo's POV. The One is from Apollo's, OBVIOUSLY.

In the end, he couldn't find a song that really clicked for Rocky so he went with Rocky/Adrian and so nobody really lost out.

BTW, he made that in like 3 days and then made 5 other treats, each in similar timeframes, while i was waffling about details like THAT FUCKING GLORIOUS SPLASH-ON-CYMBAL CRASH omfg nevermind I have no regrets.

IMPORTANT FACT: It was going to be a light comedy vid. I laughed out loud when I was laying clips in the intro and was looking forward to various goofy things...

and then I got my period. Not actually lying. Through the lens of introspective emotion, suddenly I was looking through clips, remembering scenes and considering Apollo and his character and motivation and there came a profound wave of PERFECT UNDERSTANDING. And I am not saying this a thing that all ladies do in their cycle, but it happens to me and I know that it happens to Sisabet. So, thanks period, because I really got Apollo/Rocky, like REALLY GENUINELY and it got so fucking serious and I knew Sisabet understood already and I KNEW WHAT I HAD TO DO. These two dudes were sweaty and in love.

And so it was.

Spoilerific trivia mostly for the benefit of [personal profile] sisabet:

1) Hey, Sisabet? I wasn't gonna kill Apollo. 1st draft it ends with gleeful splashing and Ian thought it was great to end it on the emotional high. But I had this...feeling. This very basic *instinct*. TRAGEDY. That is where the candy lives. At first, I doubted this. I always doubt! But I thought "since I'm trying to drill straight to tender core of her mind...WWSD?". I was pretty sure I knew, so I asked
[personal profile] trelkez and [personal profile] fan_eunice what they thought, and even had Greensilver check with Cappy. Cappy said "kill him".

My resolve was set. First draft of "Apollo Dies" reduced Ian's difficult to describe. He had his hands over his mouth and his eyes were kind of stricken and he made this noise and said "Jesus...that is...that is *devastating*"

2) Ian does not like this song, and doesn't think it's good. And he is, *sujectively* wrong:

(joyo) god this bridge
(joyo) this magical moog sythesizer why is it even there bridge
(joyo) The peak made me nod my head so hard my headphones fell off
(joyo) how can you say this is a bad song?
(joyo) You can only say this is a bad song if you are a bad *person*
(joyo) Wild horses don't run in no city
(joyo) where you need a job
(joyo) Wild horses won't lay you off from the meat packing plan
(joyo) t

3) I wanted to keep all of the verses uncut, but the lyrics of the first half of the 2nd verse weren't working, so I considered a few more emotional jabs:

(joyo) look, all I am saying is that sex and love no longer gel in a mortuary
(joyo) so I think it's entirely reasonable to kill mick in that verse you want to cut
(AbsoluteDestiny) oh dear

4) I was going to soften the blow of killing Apollo by leaving in more of the piano autro (did I mention the full song is 6 mins long? yeah). In the autro I was going to bring in more amazing pre-bought footage of Apollo and his costumes and fanfare, to suggest that though he may no longer be on this Earth, he was rewarded for his courage and prowess by going to Excellent Boxer America Heaven. In the end, it seemed a bit too goofy, and also the vid was already 4:30 and...yeah.

5) I don't care that I actually made this, [personal profile] sisabet is still rude for guessing it on me JUST BECAUSE THE SONG IS ELTON JOHN. I am a *reformed* obsessive, and I have been clean for at least 13 years.

6) This is the first vid where I left myself enough time to do really decent clean-up and tweaks. I felt THE PRESSURE.

7) I discovered the crossfade tool in Premiere 6.5. Ian said not to overuse it. I did, because he's not the boss of me just because he's been doing this for over a decade and has trophies and shit. But in later revisions I actually took them out myself because...well, because I grew to understand their power. In this vid, I learned to crossfade for reasons. REASONS.

I remember listening to you talk about this vid 10 year old me knew how epic the Rocky movies were but 10 year old me never realized the massive love Rocky and Apollo had for each other. um, wow.

they really do love each other, don't they? at first I was kind of wary of the Elton John track but after the first minute or so I was hooked, mostly because of how the song felt paired with their magical running on the beach scene where they ended up hugging. because wtf, omg, it is perfect.

the splash on the cymbal crash was truly epic in ways that transcend the written word.

bravo. bra-fucking-o.
